An Easter Season Message from Bishop Tobin

Dear Friend:

In the joy of this Easter Season I am pleased to extend my greetings, prayers and blessings to all the members of the Diocese of Providence.

Easter, of course, is the central celebration of the Christian Faith. In fact, St. Paul reminds us clearly that if “Christ has not been raised from the dead, then our faith is in vain.” (I Cor 15:17) But we believe that Jesus has been raised, and that changes everything! The Resurrection of Christ imparts renewed hope and peace to our world, our Church and, surely, to each and every one of us.

Your support of the Church, especially in the annual Catholic Charity Appeal, allows the Church to carry on its perennial mission of proclaiming the good news of Jesus. It is a message that our world wants and needs to hear. Thank you so much for all you do to support the Church — spiritually, personally and financially. You can be certain that God will reward your goodness.

May you and your loved ones have a blessed and truly joyful Easter Season!

Sincerely yours,

Thomas J. Tobin
Bishop of Providence

Easter: The Season of Hope

On that first Easter morning, Jesus rose from the dead. It was a day when the grief and tears of Good Friday were replaced by joy...and hope.

With hope being at the heart of the Easter season, we can have confidence and faith that God will always be there for us, especially in our times of need. He did not abandon His son, Jesus...and will never abandon us.

Pope Francis asks us to pay close attention, especially during the Easter season, to others around us, our neighbors...people within our own community, who need our help. It is during this joyous season when even the most tragic suffering can be transformed into new life.

That's why the Diocese of Providence supports so many ministries, bringing hope and the possibility of transformation to so many people in Rhode Island.

Thanks to our supportive Catholic community and the Catholic Charity Appeal, the Diocese is able to provide beds to those without a home...warmth to a family who’s cold...education to children when learning is far out of reach...or a hand to help immigrants and refugees who are alone in a new place...the elderly, and so many others throughout our state.

The Easter season provides us hope that all can be renewed, restored, and transformed the same way Jesus transformed His death at the cross into New Life at Easter.

The good news of Easter’s joy means having ourselves behind and encouraging others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles...sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly, and outcast...
-Pope Francis

Faith in Resurrection

Our faith in Resurrection means we believe God will always bring us out of suffering. With so much hatred and violence in the world, our faith tells us that God’s love will conquer all sins.

That’s why Easter is a perfect time to reflect on our thoughts as Catholics...to practice forgiveness and love. We must celebrate and proclaim our belief that God will bring good to our world.

What would our lives be like if every Christian lived the commandment of love, as God asks us to? Would there be less hatred? Less violence? Imagine a world where people forgive more easily, and share more with one another...the way so many of us do within our own Rhode Island Catholic community.

To believe in the Resurrection means we must believe in love, and carry God’s love beyond the Easter season, and into every day of our lives.
